In mathematics, a set is a welldefined collection of distinct elements or members. The elements that make up a set can be anything people, letters of the alphabet, or mathematical objects, such as numbers, points in space, lines or other geometrical shapes, algebraic constants and variables, or other sets. Two sets are equal if and only if they have precisely the same elements. In set theory, a universal set is a set which contains all objects, including itself. In set theory as usually formulated, the conception of a universal set leads to Russells paradox and is consequently not allowed. However, some nonstandard variants of set theory include a universal set.
